Reiterlesmarkt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Probably the most beautiful Christmas market in the region

This year from 26.11 – 23.12.2021

In the center of the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the most beautiful Christmas market in the region takes place every year. Medieval charm and a dreamy Christmas atmosphere make the Reiterlesmarkt a very special event every year. For four weeks, visitors have the opportunity to stroll through the market square, the Grüner Platz and the Kirchplatz and feast on magically fragrant delicacies. Many craftsmen exhibit their products at the small Christmas stalls, which are particularly suitable as beautiful gifts. Today, the Christmas market looks back on 500 years of tradition and tells its visitors its very own story.

Käthe Wohlfahrt Museum

A special highlight of the Rothenburg Christmas market is probably the Käthe Wohlfahrt museum in Herrengasse. Covering more than 250 square meters, the Christmas museum sparkles in every corner. In the museum, which has been in existence since 1981, visitors learn all about the origins of Christmas and its tradition. Christmas lovers can also marvel at the Christmas decorations of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Schneeball

Original Rothenburg snowball

Of course, there’s one thing you can’t miss at the Rothenburg Christmas market: the original Rothenburg snowball. The traditional specialty is a crumbly egg dough, which is prepared in special bells and baked with vegetable fat. Since the Middle Ages, the Schneeballen has been baked as a sweet delicacy for celebrations and festivals. Today, the traditional pastry can be found mainly at the romantic Reiterlesmarkt and in specialty stores in the old town. To ensure that there is something for everyone, the balls consist of a wide variety of fillings, from nougat to marzipan.

Performance of the Rothenburger Reiterle

The Reiterlesmarkt has its very own little Christmas messenger. Every year, the “Rothenburger Reiterles” (name giver) opens the romantic market and wanders through the alleys on horseback at a late hour to bring a blissful Christmas season to all visitors. At this special Christmas market, visitors will not find a mass spectacle, but a unique Christmas fairy tale.

Insider tip:

Those who wish can also enjoy the beautiful Reiterlesmarkt from above. From Friday to Sunday, visitors are allowed to climb the town hall tower for this purpose.
